lyrics
See the warships on the horizon
seeking shelter from the coming storm?
New Haven won't grant them safe haven,
but it's any old port in a storm.
The painted ladies look so pretty,
and the men in their white uniforms...
See them fall upon that fair city
with her pimps, her pigeons and her worms!
The bed-springs creak, the chimneys shudder,
and the oarsmen are all ragged breath'd.
The coxswain calls, "You boys best hurry!"
while his madam cries into her dress.
The men mouth curses, pull their boots on,
and women press kerchiefs to their breasts.
With hair all mussed they pat their pockets
as the stars sink slowly in the west.
Chorus:
How much weight can this world take?
How much weight before she breaks?
